The proposed project focuses on up-scaling the management technologies in cashew nut production and hence positively contributes to increased agricultural revenues and food security for the farmers in the target region. KALRO has developed various technologies addressing the above constraints with an aim to enhance cashew production in the coastal region. Due to poor crop management practices, old unproductive orchards, inadequate quality planting materials, high post-harvest losses, prevalence of pests and other diseases and poor marketing infrastructure the production has declined drastically, thus reducing its economic importance. It has often been the main factor for the increase and decline of the produce.Ĭashew production has been an important income generating activity in coastal Kenya. Marketing of cashew nut has been a problem particularly to the producers. Such problems have also affected the quantity and quality of nuts needed for processing. The cashew nut industry has suffered from a multitude of constraints - socio-economic, bio-physical and technical, which are directly or indirectly linked to production and marketing. Cashew is therefore a good crop for investment and development support. These nuts are in high demand in Germany and Nordic countries. The demand for fair trade and organic cashew is also on the increase. The global demand for processed cashew nuts and its accompanying value added products is increasing steadily. In 2015 the country exported 600 Mt of cashew kernels. ![]() ![]() Kenya has an installed processing capacity of 45,000 tons/year raw cashew, which is way above production level. In 2016, the area under cashew was estimated at 21,284 ha with a production of 11,404Mt valued at Kshs. ![]() The cashew nuts industry directly and indirectly employs 4000 and 50,000 people, respectively. It is grown in Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River Mombasa and Lamu Counties. It has been the combination of a contribution of € 1.9 million from the EU Emergency Trust Fund for Stability and addressing root causes of irregular migration and displaced persons in Africa (EUTF for Africa), together with the coordination and expertise of the V4 countries, that has had a positive impact on the Kenyan coast, more specifically in the coastal areas of Kilifi, Kwale and Lamu, which the Secretary of State visited during her visit to Kenya earlier this year.Disseminate Cashew management technologies for enhanced cashew nut production in coastal KenyaĬashew is the most important cash crop in coastal Kenya. When the EU Delegation in Nairobi was looking for project partners in 2017, Slovakia approached colleagues from the V4 countries to callk tham to take a part in overseeing the implementation, which ran from September 2017 to 31 May this year. In Kenya, which is one of the three ODA program countries of the Slovak Republic, this focus is strongly present in the implementation of projects in several parts of the country, on the coast and in the highlands. The Slovak Republic has been focusing on ecology and sustainable use of natural resources for more than a decade within the framework of official development assistance (ODA SR). ![]()
